Federal Forms Filed:    

  • IRS Form 941 is filed quarterly
  • IRS Form 944 is filed annually 
  • IRS Form 940 is filed annually 

FICA:  (Forms 941 or 944) Social Security and Medicare.  Half is deducted from the employee's paycheck and half is paid by the employer.  Also called FICA-SS and FICA-MED

Pay Frequency:  FICA and FIT taxes can be due monthly, semiweekly, or next-day, depending on the size of the company and the amount of taxes due.

FIT:   (Forms 941 or 944) Federal Income Tax is the tax you pay on your annual income to the federal government.  Can also be called Federal Withholdings or Federal WH.

FUTA:  (Form 940)  Federal Unemployment Tax Act, with state unemployment systems, provides for payments of unemployment compensation to workers who have lost their jobs. Most employers pay both a Federal and a State unemployment tax.

SUTA:   SUTA refers to the State Unemployment Tax Act, and SUTA tax is a payroll tax that’s levied to help fund state unemployment benefits. Note, however, that each state has its own version of SUTA. This means you must check with your state’s SUTA rules and regulations to ensure you’re in compliance with your state’s specific requirements. While SUTA tax is the most common name for this tax, depending on your state, it might go by another name, such as: 

State unemployment insurance (SUI)
Reemployment tax
Employment security tax
Pay Frequency:  Usually quarterly
Forms Filed:  Varies by state
